A photomontage is a composite image made by joining together and printing portions of more than one negative to synthesize an image not found in reality. Dada and Surrealist artists in Europe were employing photomontage in the 1910s and 1920s as an art medium, but a more likely influence on this American image of sport is a tradition of trick photography employed in humorous commercial postcards.
