Here, and throughout his work, D’Angelo Lovell Williams explores intersections of Blackness, queerness, and family. The artist sits beneath a photograph of his mother as a young woman. One hand points toward his groin. Lovell Williams remained closeted while growing up because he believed neither his family nor his community in Jackson, Mississippi, would accept a gay man. That identification animates his layered compositions in works like this one.
