Over the years, Herbst has made a number of photography trips to the American West, including Canyonlands National Park, located near Moab, Utah, a popular destination for landscape photographers. From an elevated location on the upper plateau between the Colorado and Green rivers, he pointed his antique 12-by-20-inch view camera downward to capture the scenic beauty of the eroded landscape. In the bottom center of the composition is White Rim Road, appearing like a faint hand-drawn line. The road’s original use was to carry mined minerals to market. Its name derives from the fact the route goes over White Rim Sandstone, theorized by geologists to initially have been a seashore region about 256 million years ago. The gradual and subtle tonal range of the platinum/palladium print beautifully presents the rugged geology of the landscape and the luminous atmosphere of a cloudy day.
