Many contemporary Chinese painters like Wucius Wong are interested in reinventing traditional Chinese ink painting with new artistic sensitivities to express modern experiences. Wong painted this after relocating to Hong Kong, but his landscapes were inspired by the Hudson River and its cliffs, near where he lived in New Jersey from 1986 to 1994. His brushwork and use of ink are traditionally Chinese, while the impact of Western modernism is seen in the rhythm and diagonal structure of the peaks and valleys.
