A 1920 trip to the Upper Pecos River Valley resulted in many temperas and ten woodcuts of the forests and lush green valley meadows. Common in the region, aspens are hardwood trees that grow in masses rather than as lone specimens. Providing dappled light that protects and promotes the rich and varied undergrowth of the forest, aspens turn golden in the autumn, as depicted in this tempera, which Baumann probably executed on-site.
