Jane and Gustave Baumann were visiting San Francisco in July 1934 when they explored Muir Woods National Monument just north of the city in Marin County. Observing a grove of old-growth redwoods resulted in this woodcut that celebrates the natural beauty of these graceful trees. The close-up view includes only the lowest section of the tree trunks, since redwoods are the tallest and largest trees in the world. A sapling in the foreground provides green foliage, scale, and a reminder that the forest is bursting with new life.
