San Francisco de Asís, situated south of Taos near the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, was built about 1730 with massive abutments and thick adobe walls; it is commonly referred to as Church Ranchos de Taos. Baumann was interested in Spanish Colonial history and made drawings and prints of many historic churches. Although Church Ranchos de Taos is printed in five colors, the artist embellished this impression by painting the umbrella with watercolor.
