Speicher's drawings, especially those in crayon or charcoal, have a directness of expression that combines stylized features with powerful emotion. This sheet is signed and dedicated to a "Joe Marguy," perhaps a relative of the young subject of this compelling portrait.
A popular portraitist, Speicher worked in a style influenced by his teacher Robert Henri (1865-1929). In 1906 Speicher entered the Art Students League in New York to study with William Merrit Chase (1849-1916). He enjoyed a successful career from the 1920s onward.
