223 20th Century Avant-Garde
After serving in the French army during World War I, Braque severed his working relationship with Pablo Picasso and concentrated on developing the formal aspects of Cubism. This painting belongs to a series of large still lifes of 1928–32, notable for their rich surfaces and colors. Braque’s constant experimentation with unusual materials and techniques is evident in the matte, textured surfaces, created by mixing paint with sand and applying it over tactile gesso.
