Everitt Shinn is best-remembered today as one of the artists who exhibited with "The Eight," but he was also a talented playwright, set designer, and inventor. Throughout his life he was actively involved with the stage, and many of his best paintings portray theater scenes. Shinn's use of pastel and dramatically cropped compositions pays homage to the French Impressionist Edgar Degas (1834–1917), but Shinn's work is distinctly lighter and more humorous.
