For this print, Roy Lichtenstein used lithography to reinterpret a painting from Impressionist artist Claude Monet’s series on the French city of Rouen’s massive cathedral. Lichtenstein playfully translated Monet’s attempts to capture natural light by enlarging the regularly patterned dots characteristic of cheap commercial printmaking to mimic the French artist’s bright dabs of oil paint.
