A follower of Whistler, Pennell particularly liked to oppose in his etchings the beauties of nature with the
works of man, juxtaposing architecture with majestic trees or formations of clouds. In this composition,
a distant view of the Thames may be glimpsed from Richmond Hill, known for its spectacular views of
London, which have been immortalized by many artists including J. M. W. Turner and Sir Joshua Reynolds.
