In 1958, Lee went to France to gain firsthand experience of the European modern art scene. In 1962, he signed a contract with the Galerie Facchetti in Paris where he held his first solo show, Lee Ungno: Collage. This work was one of the pieces displayed in that historic exhibition.
After dividing magazine and newspaper scraps according to their color, Lee layered and pasted them to the canvas. Here, the humble materiality of paper scraps, which the artist used as pigments, is transformed into an essential principle of his interpretation of European collage techniques.
