Guo Ziyi (697–781) is considered one of the greatest generals in Chinese history.
Description
This colorful folding screen depicts the great military general Guo Ziyi (697–781) enjoying his birthday. The first panel (far right) unfolds a panoramic view of Guo’s luxurious mansion and garden. The summer lushness is expressed in expensive blue and green mineral pigments, such as azulite and malachite. Across the lower section of the first three panels, a band of boys—some carrying a large banner and one riding a toy horse—plays in a procession. The subject of Guo’s birthday banquet was first developed in the royal court, but toward the end of the 1800s, it was common in the homes of the upper middle class.
