The collaboration of the Jewish-American photographer, who lives in China, and the Chinese-American painter expands the definition of identity in contemporary Chinese art.

Description

Photographer Michael Cherney and painter Arnold Chang create contemporary ink landscapes by uniting their disparate media. Cherney’s poetic photographs are inspired by traditional Chinese painting. An excerpt from one of his photographs was printed onto textured xuan paper. Chang, who received literati-style training in painting and connoisseurship, then extended the image with his brush and ink to create this larger landscape, which defies categorization as painting or photograph, contemporary or traditional, Chinese or American.
