Although best known for her images of industry and world events, Margaret Bourke-White was also a very capable portraitist.

Description

Stephen Early, a journalist, served as the White House Press Secretary under Franklin D. Roosevelt from 1933 to 1945 and again under Harry S. Truman in 1950. Bourke-White photographed Early from above; he looks up over his desk at her as if caught in the middle of work. His desktop is piled with papers rife with handwritten edits and corrections, alluding to his job of editing and approving statements issued by the White House.
