Description

The woodblock-printed image at the beginning of this book portrays Kazue, the heroine of the Osaka-set domestic drama Whirlpool. Originally printed as a serial in the Osaka Asahi Shinbun newspaper, the complete story by author Watanabe Katei (渡辺 霞亭, 1864–1926) was then printed as a set of four volumes, each with an illustration by Kaburaki Kiyokata of Kazue, her daughter, or the two of them together. In the same year, the story was made into a silent movie.
