Did you know?

This video includes a performance by the American cellist Charlotte Moorman playing Nam June Paik's TV Cello (1971).

This upbeat, experimental video opens with a couple dancing vigorously to “Devil with a Blue Dress,” their bodies pulsing and swaying against a psychedelic background. The frenetic pace of the video, created in collaboration with engineer John Godfrey, is meant to encourage a futuristic look at the media landscape at the time it was made, in 1973. The artist wanted to transport the public to a “new world when you will be able to switch on every TV channel in the world and TV guides will be as thick as the Manhattan telephone book,” as a voice announces before the opening sequence. The abrupt switching between scenes and music is meant to mimic the rapid changing of channels, creating an innovative “collage” of moving imagery.
