In Vertical Roll, Joan Jonas, a pioneer in the video art medium, employs the rolling bar, a common gliche in analogue TV, to introduce the camera to her experimental performances. For the soundtrack, Jonas bangs a spoon as she moves her body in time with the vertical strobe, creating a mesmerizing, rhythmic work.
