Bolm, a lead dancer of the Ballets Russes, ended up playing an important role in the development of American ballet as a teacher, performer, and choreographer.
The Carnival, set during a masked ball, uses characters and costumes based on the commedia dell’arte, a form of Italian theatrical comedy in the 16th through 18th centuries. Bolm plays Pierrot the sad clown. His friends make fun of him because he is spurned by Butterfly, with whom he is in love. Emil Otto Hoppé became close friends with Bolm during the London seasons of the Ballets Russes.
