Portrait of a Shade

Portrait of a Shade

(American, 1899–1998)

Image: 50.4 x 40.5 cm (19 13/16 x 15 15/16 in.); Paper: 50.4 x 40.5 cm (19 13/16 x 15 15/16 in.)

While a striking study of light and shadow, this work also has an emotional component. Bing’s sense of isolation and alienation in New York can be intuited from this view of a window that reveals nothing of the outside world.
