“A wiry jolly grandma dressed in her Sunday best” grabbed Freed’s arm after a church service and suggested he come along to a funeral at a church down the road. “‘It’s a fine funeral, isn’t it’? she said. . . . I asked if she knew the person who died. ‘No,’ she said. It was a young woman who had gone North some years ago, suddenly she became sick and died. Now she had been shipped home to the family.
