Maar is hardly alone among Surrealists in making works that suggest or depict sexual practices "forbidden"by society. Photography’s realism makes her montage more shocking than if it were composed of the same images done as wood engravings or drawings. Although Maar may have used some found images, at least one element comes from a photograph she took. The boy under the table is one of the figures in Children Playing.
