Stairwell and Plants in Kew Gardens

Stairwell and Plants in Kew Gardens

Dora Maar

(French, 1907–1997)

Photographing the interior of the Kew Gardens Palm House in London, Maar juxtaposes the botanical ornaments and structure of its distinctive Victorian ironwork staircase with the lacy, far less regimented leaves and trunks of the plants. Botanical studies by Maar in the Raymond collection contrast profuse foliage with spare, geometric built elements.
