Photographing ethnographic objects for a museum started Renger-Patzsch on the path to developing the sharply focused, deadpan style seen in these plant images that were made to illustrate books on various species of plants. The use of extreme close-up removes any sense of context, emphasizes the plants’ structures, and animates what should be a coldly scientific inquiry.
