Baumann enjoyed singing competitions during his student days in Munich and joined a German chorale society when he returned to Chicago in 1905. Singverein depicts the group, including the artist, who is the singer with glasses at left. At the top of the scene, cherubs hold up a banner with the title Gaudeamus Igitur (So Let Us Rejoice),consideredthe oldest student drinking song in Europe.
