Description

The strong light of southern venues changed Hewit’s palette. While the bright red on the roof in Vacation Photographers transmits the warmth of a hot sun, the large patch of lavender in the sky and other pastel hues signify a new direction. Although Hewit did transfer scale drawings to blocks using tracing paper, she sometimes drew directly onto the woodblock. Uncut graphite lines on the block for Vacation Photographers were transferred to the paper during the printing process and can be seen in the light green foliage in the middle foreground.
