Description

Although he first told her "the 20th century is no time to start drawing on rocks," Rauschenberg was convinced to try lithography by Tatyana Grosman, the proprietor of the print workshop Universal Limited Art Editions (ULAE). Visitation II is a marvelous example of how Rauschenberg, who likes ambiguity, deliberately obscured the meaning of the image by combining photographs transferred to the lithography plate and areas of spontaneous brushwork executed with tusche, or lithographic ink.
