Transposition '89 - High Ground - VI

Tadayoshi Nakabayashi

(Japanese, 1937-)

Probably photo-etching, etching, drypoint and aquatint

Sheet: 57 x 50.2 cm (22 7/16 x 19 3/4 in.); Image: 60.5 x 45.7 cm (23 13/16 x 18 in.)

Mr. and Mrs. William E. Ward Collection Fund 1993.105

This image is made up of plants and grasses formed into abstract shapes, creating a tension between the nearly photographic depiction of natural forms and the geometric design elements of the composition. Nakabayashi demonstrates a fascinating adaptation of the Western etching technique, creating a depth of surface that is recognizably Japanese in its feeling for texture and in the play of black and white that recalls the ideals of traditional calligraphy.
