Haunting overtones of childhood’s lost innocence infuse Spain’s dreamlike paintings, as in this example of a young girl with her pets amid a sparse moonlit interior. With their geometrically stylized faces, rigid bodies, and marionette limbs, the artist’s human figures were inspired by her love of antique dolls.
