Girl with Birds

Girl with Birds

Mary Spain

(American, 1934–1983)

Oil on canvas

Unframed: 76.2 x 61 cm (30 x 24 in.)

Gift of Joseph M. Erdelac 1979.118

Haunting overtones of childhood’s lost innocence infuse Spain’s dreamlike paintings, as in this example of a young girl with her pets amid a sparse moonlit interior. With their geometrically stylized faces, rigid bodies, and marionette limbs, the artist’s human figures were inspired by her love of antique dolls.
