Erastus Dow Palmer

(American, 1817-1904)

Framed: 72.5 x 5 cm (28 9/16 x 1 15/16 in.); Diameter: 53.3 cm (21 in.)

Purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund 1977.10.2

Early in his career, Palmer made cameo portraits--gems or shells carved in low relief. The delicate carving of his marble representations of Morning and Evening can probably be attributed to his early experience with cameos.
