This print is from a set of 12 comprising images of the ten disciples of the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, and two enlightened beings called bodhisattvas. Munakata Shikō was part of the sōsaku hanga (creative prints) movement, which diverged from Japan’s traditional workshop-based woodblock printing practices. Instead of different individuals designing, carving, and printing a work, this 1900s trend emphasized all aspects of the process being done by a single artist.
