Description
Hayter returned to Paris in 1950 and reopened Atelier 17, which had been transplanted to New York during World War II. Shortly after, he purchased a vacation home in the scenic Ardèche region in southwestern France. A stream named l’Escoutay flowed through the property, and the interplay of light on its flowing waters inspired the artist to create many prints over several years. Here, the abstracted female figure likely represents a mythological water goddess.
