Rufino Tamayo's work often combined his indigenous Zapotec and Mexican background with his interest in European modernism. The color scheme in Woman and Bird is evocative of pre-Columbian pottery, which the artist collected, while the scene's collapsed plane references Tamayo's interest in Cubism.
