While living in Nice after World War I, Matisse adopted a more relaxed style saturated with the warm colors of the Mediterranean. This painting depicts the view from the balcony of Matisse's room at the Hôtel de la Meditérranée overlooking the Promenade des Anglais in Nice. Pictured on the balcony are Matisse's daughter, Marguerite, and his model, Henriette, poised to toss their flowers to the participants in the parade below.
