Embroidered Miter

Embroidered Miter

Silk; metal thread embroidery on silk

Overall: 92.5 x 30.8 cm (36 7/16 x 12 1/8 in.)

Bequest of John L. Severance 1942.834

Only the pope bestowed miters on cardinals and bishops. This spectacular miter glistens with brilliant gilt-metal thread, enriching the symmetrical decoration on an allover silver-metal thread ground, embroidered in brick stitch. The splendid long lappets evolved from secular headgear that tied under the chin.
