This beaded strip was stitched to a hide or a blanket.
Untailored robes made from large animal skins, a basic article of Plains attire, were sometimes ornamented with long strips patterned geometrically with quillwork or, later, beadwork. The strip was stitched between the hide’s neck and the tail; when the robe was pulled around the body, the strip was oriented horizontally. Similar strips were also sewn to the wool blankets that eventually replaced animal-skin robes.
