Interested in finding out if a museum career is for you? The Cleveland Museum of Art offers both unpaid and paid internship and fellowship opportunities. In addition to adding practical skills to their resumés, museum interns meet regularly with museum professionals to gain a sense of the overall workings of the institution.
While specific opportunities for placement change from semester to semester, past placements have occurred in the curatorial, education, marketing and communications, and publications departments, as well as collections management, conservation, and the Ingalls Library. We structure our internship terms to comply with most university requirements for an independent study - check with your college or university for details on its requirements.
The museum accepts interns for placement in the fall, spring and summer terms.
To apply, candidates should submit a 500-word essay detailing what he or she hopes to gain from an internship, in addition to a resumé of employment and education; a writing sample not longer than 3 pages in length, and at least one letter of recommendation. High school, undergraduate, and graduate students may submit materials for unpaid internships to internships [at] clevelandart [dot] org.
Gallery Host Internship
Gallery One offers visitors new ways of interpreting the museum's collection through a unique blend of art, interpretation, and technology. Interns will develop their ability to facilitate conversations with all types of visitors and learn about different museum audiences. They will complete independent readings about museum education that will inform their own writing about their experience at the museum. To hone verbal and oral communication skills, interns will be required to complete six informal essays about their Gallery One experience, a one-minute presentation on an object in the gallery, and a 30-second instructional presentation about one of the technology interactives. Successful applicants will complete a phone or onsite interview. Submit all materials listed above to galleryoneintern [at] clevelandart [dot] org.
Paid Fellowship Opportunities
There are currently three paid opportunities for undergraduates during the summer term. Thanks to the generosity of the Warshawsky family, two undergraduates are selected to come to Cleveland to deepen their knowledge of career opportunities in a museum setting. The candidates must generally meet the following criteria:- they have had some previous museum volunteer experience; they are art history majors; they would be newly introduced to Cleveland with this opportunity; and they are exceptional students. A stipend of $3,000 is provided to cover each Warshawsky intern’s eight-week fellowship. Applicants must follow the deadlines listed above and submit all materials listed above as well as a writing sample and two letters of recommendation (preferably via electronic means) to warshawsky [at] clevelandart [dot] org.
The Director’s Fellowship was funded by our director’s office to promote diversity in our ranks by selecting a top candidate from one of our nation’s historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to come to Cleveland for the summer and gain exposure to the many career paths available in museum work at a large institution like the Cleveland Museum of Art. While art history majors are often the most suitable candidates, candidates with other majors may be considered as well. A stipend of $3,000 is provided to subsidize each Director’s Intern’s eight-week fellowship. Applicants must follow the deadlines listed above and submit all materials listed above as well as a writing sample and two letters of recommendation (preferably via electronic means) to directorsinternship [at] clevelandart [dot] org.
