Fudo-Myoo No. 100

Fudo-Myoo No. 100

Kihei Sasajima

(Japanese, 1906-1994)

Embossed woodcut

Sheet: 66 x 50.3 cm (26 x 19 13/16 in.); Image: 60.5 x 45.7 cm (23 13/16 x 18 in.)

Mr. and Mrs. William E. Ward Collection Fund 1993.104

Sasajima--whose 1954 print A Mountain Stream is also in
this exhibition (see 1959.202)--changed his style radically
in the 1990s. Although earlier he wanted to retain the twodimensional
quality of calligraphy, he deeply embossed
Fudo-Myoo No. 100, creating a three-dimensional
representation of a Buddhist figure.
