Martyrdom of a Saint

Martyrdom of a Saint

after 1866

Hermann Samuel Ratzerdorfer

(Austrian, 1815-1891)

Overall: 9.6 x 5.5 cm (3 3/4 x 2 3/16 in.)

Gift of Mrs. Chester D. Tripp 1970.122

Recent research has revealed that this plaquette—long characterized as an Italian object from the 1500s—is indeed by the hand of a 19th-century silversmith working in Vienna. The subject of the Renaissance-style object also cannot be precisely identified, although it was long associated with the beheading of Saint Paul.
